One of the best motivators to get me into a gym or outside for a run, is having nice workout gear. Mentally, it works the same as with any other outfit: if I’m dressed nice, I know I’ll walk into that gym with much more confidence than when I put on just an old t-shirt that resembles a potato-bag ‘because it will get sweaty anyway’.
It’s not only about being fashionable, the right work out gear has function too and will keep you comfortable throughout your work out, it will help you get rid of sweat, accentuate the right parts and it, err, will keeps things in place, so to speak.
When I just started running, I bought a pair of 3/4 running pants. Perfect solution, I thought to myself, being a bit smug. I wasn’t so smug anymore when winter came; those pants were not warm enough. For one winter, I ran in an utterly unflattering pair of men’s pants. I ran in the dark and they were black, so nobody saw it, but I knew. I knew they were not right and I thought they made my bottom look huge, so I never felt confident in them. Come that next winter, I bought myself a pair of girly work-out pants which made me feel so much more confident; I still believe that affected my performance.
Being tall and finding the right workout gear comes with the same challenges as finding any other garment; we need length. So I did some research into which brands offer sports gear for tall girls, and I’ll share them with you here to save you some time when you’re looking for yours! You’re welcome! 😉
The usual suspects:
Long Tall Sally
LTS offers quite a wide range of sportswear, including bottoms, tops, fleeces, jackets, sports bras and shoes. I have one pair of LTS cropped running pants myself; they’re quite high around the waist too, which I like.
Alloy offers a range called ‘loungewear’ with a few nice pieces that look very comfi for yoga or Pilates class.
Our favorite tall sisters offer various tops and bottoms, of which a few go up to inseam ’38 which I’m sure some of you will love!
Other brands offering tall sizes:
They offer a colorful line of fashionable workout gear, and bottoms with a ‘tall’ option which has inseam ’31. That may not be long enough for all of us, but at least it’s a start (and the prices are very likeable too).
Athleta is very friendly for women in all shapes and sizes. They offer a tall range of bottoms and skirts with 3′ extra length.
Believe it or not, but Victoria’s Secret offers quite a nice range of active wear, and 10 of their bottoms come in three different inseams. I have not figured out yet what their definition of a ‘long’ is as I could not find that info on the website, but once I do, I’ll let you know.
One of my favourite brands for active wear is Sweaty Betty. They’re so stylish! They offer only a few pairs of pants with extra length, but I have one pair of dance leggings in a ‘standard’ size (which I use for Pilates), and they’re incredibly long! I’m really happy with them.
To be honest; they say they offer a tall range, but it’s very limited: I found 3 long pants in tall sizes on the website. They also offer shorts and skirts in tall sizes, which I think is a bit cheeky as that’s cheating, sort of. What we need is long work out pants with that extra bit of length!
Finally, you might get lucky at H&M. Though I’m not a fan of them as I think the quality of H&M clothing isn’t all that, I did find a nice warm fleece running top there with awfully long sleeves. Look:
I’m sure there’s more to be found out there, so if you have any additions, do let me know! Happy sweating!! 🙂
