Where Bridget meets Bond

Stoke-0892Last week, we went for dinner at Stoke Park Country Club, Spa & Hotel, located 25 minutes away from where we are staying, in the heart of Buckinghamshire. The Mansion building is located in the middle of 300 acres of green parkland, lush gardens and lakes.

Having been featured in several major films, among which Bridget Jones (the famous rowing scene during the mini-break of Bridget and Daniel Cleaver ), two James Bond films (Goldfinger and Tomorrow Never Dies) and Layer Cake (starring the current James Bond Daniel Craig), my guy wanted to go here and invited me along as his Bond girl (sorry Bridget), so on our way we went.

Driving there, it felt like a rainy November evening rather than what was supposed to be a warm one in July. Nonetheless, the bendy roads through the English countryside always take my breath away.

The drive to the Manor house was reminiscent of the opening scenes of Layer Cake.

The landscaping around the mansion is impeccable.

I don’t play golf myself, but I can see why you would here.

Repton bridge on the golf course;
unfortunately, the weather did not allow for a rowing session like Daniel and Bridget’s.

Our ride over the sweeping driveway towards the mansion was nice, but not as stylish as this one

Time for the main event: dinner!
Nothing was shaken or stirred, but we started with a heavenly glass of Veuve Clicquot and  luscious canapés in the Presidents Bar.

(Bonus points were granted for serving me vegetarian canapés whilst dietary wishes were only discussed when making the reservation months before. I had a tasty vegetarian Baba Ganoush, and the Hobbit had something meaty .)

We moved to Humphry’s Fine Dining Restaurant.
The decor is a bit classical for our liking, but compliments the location very well.

I started with Cumin Pan-fried Scallops, Cauliflower Puree and Raisin Compote.

My lovely vegetarian main course of various roasted vegetables and brie
(which I am sure is described much sexier on the menu 😉 )

The food was lovely; well prepared, well presented, albeit served in a rather steep pace, so we asked to slow it down for a bit.

With one course, we were served a tasty English wine, which was so very tasty and unexpected. England isn’t known for its wines after all, but we were told there are some very good ones and that we need to keep an eye on them. So we will.

Last but not least, my Bond tall girl outfit.
I was wearing one of my favourite dresses; my cream Alexander McQueen dress.
It has a great seventies feel to it and I love the layered scallop detail on the skirt.
It is not only a pretty dress, but also a comfi one and length wise, it’s perfect for an evening out. After all, that is the time for us tall girls to show off our legs,  isn’t it? IMG_9764

Sounds like a positively fabulous night out. The dishes look/sound amazing and the surroundings are gorgeous. Speaking of gorgeous, I love that dress.

Thank you! It was fab! I love how it is hard to be overdressed in England, whereas in NL, people very quickly look at you with raised eyebrows when you show up somewhere in a dress rather than in your jeans, when you are not attending a wedding. 🙂 (that is one weirdly constructed sentence, but you get what I mean… :))
